Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary archipelago and the closest one to the African coast with only 100km separating it from Morocco. With over three thousand hours of sunshine a year, the weather here is often compared to that of Florida and Mexico. Even though most of the land on Fuerteventura consists of stone and rock because of its violent volcanic past, this island has some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe and nowhere else in the Canaries can you find as many enormous sand dunes and long sandy beaches.

The origin of Fuerteventura’s name has never been fully discovered. Some people think it means 'strong adventure' (fuerte aventura) others says it derives from the Spanish 'venturoso' and is a synonym for 'happy islands' and translates into 'favoured by fate', but most favour the idea that the name Fuerteventura means strong wind, whichever the truth the island is aptly named. The sun, beaches and wind lend itself to Fuerteventura being a favourite among water sport enthusiasts. Every year hundreds of windsurfers, surfers and divers come to Fuerteventura to enjoy its climate and sporting adventures and during July the island is host to the P.W.A world windsurfing speed and slalom event.

This however, is only one face of this amazing island. Fuerteventura is widely believed to be the oldest of the Canary Islands and does in fact give home to the oldest town in the archipelago, that of Betancuria which once was the capitol of Fuerteventura. This is not only one of Fuerteventura's most historic towns, it is also one of its prettiest. Betancuria’s historic quarter features stunning examples of traditional whitewashed architecture, a museum that is well worth a visit, the ruins of a monastery, a bodega and many artisans' workshops. The whole island has offered up a wealth of archaeological and historic finds and much of the towns on Fuerteventura still keep their old world charm.

Already many people who have come to Fuerteventura on their holidays, have fallen in love with the island and the way of life there, so there is a rich expat society mixed in with the traditional Spanish. Let Carmen Villazán family estate agents help your dream become a reality when looking for that perfect home abroad.
