Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Spanish owned Canary archipelago and is situated about 90 km's from the west coast of Africa. Despite its size Fuerteventura is one of the less developed of all the Canary Islands and boasts several miles of beautiful, un-crowded, white sand beaches. Here you will find a dramatic coastline with areas where shining black volcanic rock meet thundering waves in a frenzy of noise and others where mountainous sand dunes and stunning white sand beaches are touched gently by calm lagoons of emerald green and vibrant blue waters; where towering mountains overlook awe inspiring lava plains and picturesque white stucco villages nestle comfortably in lush green palm groves swaying gently in the breeze.
The two main resorts in Fuerteventura are Correlejo and Caleta de Fuste. Once a small fishing village, Correlejo has seen a massive amount of development over the last few years and now lays claim to being the island's main resort with an impressive selection of shops, bars and restaurants. In spite of its growth, it has managed to keep its village atmosphere. There is a main street kept colourful with a variety of beautifully scented flowers, an attractive and well looked after town square and a largely pedestrianised traffic-free area bordering the sea, where you can relax with a drink or a meal and admire the magnificent views across the bay. The night life, although busy by Fuerteventura’s standards, is generally low-key with four discos, a selection of bars as well as free entertainment in the main square on most evenings (including live music, Canarian dancing and flamenco).
Correlejo has two small sized sandy beaches, but a little over a mile to the south are the "Grandes Playas". These are nearly seven miles of uninterrupted, fine, white sand with spectacular sand-dunes where activities include sunbathing and swimming, windsurfing, Jet-skiing, game fishing and scuba diving (there are schools and hire centres in town).
The other main resort of Caleta de Fuste, also known as El Castillo because of an 18th Century castle (the Martello tower), is a modern, purpose-built area with shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. The gently shelving beach and calm, shallow waters of the bay make this a popular choice with families. Water sports enthusiasts are also well catered for and facilities include windsurfing, scuba-diving and sailing. The main shopping area here is also traffic-free and you can find boutiques and gift shops as well as bars and restaurants.
With well over 70 kilometres of pristine white beaches; an unbeatable climate which is virtually the same climate as Florida and Mexico; friendly people and stunning villages, Fuerteventura is shaping up to become a mecca for those seeking relaxation in peace, tranquility and beauty.
